Rainy Day Projects for Children

Add a little rain to your summer vacation and kids retreat indoors to play with electronics, unless an adult gently nudges them to participate in rainy day projects.

Rainy days do not have to spoil your summer vacation; rather, bring the the fun indoors. Almost any outdoor activity can be modified and played indoors. Cards, board games, and some art will have kids playing for hours on those summer rainy days.

Most kids will retreat indoors to play video games or watch a marathon of movies unless parents and caregivers have other options available that are intriguing and engaging.

Solitaire Games

Pyramid, 24, and clock solitaire are just a few solitaire games available. Solitaire games will engage a child for about 30 minutes and reinforces basic numeracy. Another option is to invent a solitaire game with your child or add a twist to a classic solitaire card game.

Google solitaire games and an exhaustive list will be displayed. Choose one or two and reacquaint yourself with the rules before you teach your kids. Best to know the rules, otherwise kids will get restless as you learn the basics of the game.

Group Card Games

Slap-jack will get the excitement going as you need to be quick of the hand to win this game. A more quiet game is war that is played between 2 players. Children enjoying playing cards because of their simplicity and since there is always a winner and loser. Card games can be played tournament style to increase the time students stay engaged in the activity.

Google card games to find a vast list of games from around the world. Teach you kids a game from Italy or a classic game from your childhood.

Board Games

Catch phrase, pictionary, and cranium are just a few games that will entertain the young and old. Games gets the brain moving, as it these involve thinking of strategy or trying to draw a picture to reveal the answer. Board games are fun and last at least an hour or two before the kids become bored and want a new activity.

Art Center

Children love to draw and learn new art techniques. Flip books, cartoon comic strips and caricatures are just a few drawing techniques to engage the child. Art is a relaxing activity that children will lose themselves in and before long the sun is shining again.

Take out the recyclables and have your children create a sculpture. Students may use glue and other art materials to build their sculpture. As well, a parent may decide for their kids the activity and everyone follows along creating the same sculpture. Egg carton crocodiles and cereal box towers are just a few ideas to engage your child.

Painting on a rainy day in the basement is a must. No child can deny painting as it allows free movement and an art medium that is rarely permitted. Painting can be done with brushes, stencils, or cute little fingers. Kids will want to do more than just one painting.

Card games, board games, and an art center are the basics for indoor activities on a rainy days. Bring out the activity to entertain the children, otherwise they will be playing video games and watching movies for hours on end. Sure there may be the odd complaint, but after 10 minutes of playing catch phrase everyone will be happily involved.
